A Mother’s Day Ramble
Posted on 09 May 2010
This MOTHER’S DAY, I’m far away from my two children, Ethan and Maggie (seen here harvesting bananas on the farm in Costa Rica where they’re living). When we’re together, we love to read, and sometimes read poetry–so I wanted to give myself the Mother’s day gift of reading some of the poems I know they enjoy, and talking about how they work and sound so they might become more familiar. I hope they, and other kids, moms, dads, and poetry folk out there, might enjoy it.
Listen to the show here:
The poems I read are
William Wordsworth “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”
Robert Frost “The Pasture” and “The Road Not Taken”
e.e. cummings “maggie and milly and molly and may”
Elizabeth Bishop “The Fish”
Wallace Stevens “The House Was Quiet and the World Was Calm”

Sharon,
It was so lovely to hear m and e’s favorites..and in your voice, to boot! I can see their little faces, hanging on every word. So nice, too, that they can listen to you anytime and be transported to Mommy’s lap. I can hear the love in your voice.
It has to be more than coincidence that two of my favorites made the list (Frost), as well as Wordsworth’s. I also loved the background music. Beethoven’s “Pastorale” (sp?)and “Simple Gifts” were perfect.
My favorite podcast yet!
And speaking of little faces..how wonderful to see all of the Howell faces today…lovely.
Happy Mother’s Day, dear.

What a beautiful gift for Ethan and Maggie–and for the rest of us to be able to share. It brought tears to my eyes.
Sharon, Bravo! Wonderful! Thank you.
